Movie Review: Mud

I have just had the pleasure of watching one of the best movies you may have never even heard of.  I know I hadn’t.  It’s amazing what a beautifully clear Saturday night, a scooter, and a cheap movie theater nearby can open your world to.  Mud  (2012) stars Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, and to a lesser degree Reese Witherspoon.  The star here is most definitely the young, up-and-coming, Tye Sheridan (and not just because he reminds me of one of my nephews).

Mud is about two boys, Ellis and Neckbone, (Sheridan and Lofland) who discover and help a fugitive by the name of Mud (McConaughey) reconnect with his one true love (Witherspoon).  It takes place along a stretch of river in Arkansas that provides a livelihood and shelter to those who live on its water.  The grittiness of the visuals is complemented poetically with the story within.

The movie itself seems to marry the coming-of-age tale, and loss of innocence, of Stand By Me (1986) with a deeper woven and deliberate message of life and love.  Spoiler alert: Us guys can be so stupid sometimes!

The performances of the cast, and the sheer strength of the story and script, are not to be missed.  For those of us who have ever truly loved another with all our heart and soul this movie will not only remind us of the tremendous power and hope it can provide to our lives, but the caution we should take when exploring it as well.

Grade: Seriously… GO!
